This Blog Has Run it’s Course and It’s Time To Say Goodbye.

Well y’all, it’s true. I haven’t really thought about posting on here in awhile. I said in my last post I’d come back, but that didn’t happen.

Honestly, it’s been fun writing this over the last couple of years. Looking back and seeing how the craft beer scene has changed and grown. Looking at how excited I use to be to go on beercations and seek out new beers. What has changed? Nothing really. I still like those things, but now that there are a million beer blogs and craft beer is ubiquitous. Even dinky little backwoods gas stations have at least a couple of good beers. It’s a great time to be a beer drinker!

Instead of deleting this blog, I’m leaving it as an online time capsule of sorts. I plan on letting my domain names expire, but it will still be here in it’s .wordpress.com variation. Maybe when I’m older and my memories start to fade I can come back and read where I was and what I was doing in these years.

I’ve got other projects that I’ll focusing on in my free time.

So while this is a goodbye to Ratchet Brews and Jason Knows Beer,  it’s a hello to other things. I’ll still be tweeting,  and posting on facebook and instagram. I’ll still be writing, but mostly for myself.

It’s been one hell of a ride, and it ain’t over (except for this site).

Things are going really well

I am posting just in case people are still checking this out. I kind of have abandoned this blog for awhile. I still want to keep it, but don’t feel like writing that much.

Things are going really well for me in Bryson City. I’ve settled into my role as assistant brewer. I have spent a lot of my free time exploring the area. Hiking is becoming a new favorite past time, I am in the right area for it since the Smoky Mountains are 2 minutes in any direction. I visit Innovation Brewing at least once a week. They’re only a 10 minute drive away. I’ve also discovered a new favorite restaurant in Sylva, Soul Infusion.

I go to Asheville quite a bit more since it’s only an hour.

There have been many events, and fun things that have happened. I could have written about a dozen or more post since last, but I really want to get more settled in a give the blog a break until December. I say that, yet here I am writing more then I intended to.

Anyway, I’m still pretty active on twitter and instagram. If you find yourself coming to Bryson City to visit the brewery, give me a shout.

Friday morning started off with a couple of the crew nursing hangovers, but myself feeling completely refreshed. I got up and immediately started uploading pictures and updating this site while everyone got their things together. Eventually we got everyone motivated, hopped in the jeep and headed out on our adventure.

I wish I would have taken more pictures there. We ate and shared samples of all kinds of super great beer. The next batch of pictures is our trip over to Crooked Stave.

The next thing we did was drive to Downtown Denver and stash the car in a parking garage. We’re leaving it and taking a can home tonight. Then we walked a few blocks away to go somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for years, Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver Colorado.

We were slowly making our way towards the Convention Center for the Friday Night GABF session, so we didn’t stay at any one place for long. After sharing my sample size beers, we headed off to the next stop.

Task master Matt keeping us on track. He said “no pictures.” so I snapped one because my phone was in my hand and I could.

The last place we stopped at before going to the convention center was Euclid Hall. We had one more beer because we all knew we’d have a long wait to get in to GABF.

It was time to get in line. The closer we got to the convention center, the craziier the energy got. People were trying to scalp tickets, and there was a big crowd forming. The air was thick with anticipation. At this point, the battery for my iPhone was almost dead, so I didn’t take a lot of pictures. Here’s a few.

They came through the Members line, scanned our tickets and gave us our wristbands! Time to drink!

Well they let the Members line go in 15 minutes early. They wouldn’t pour beer for that time. It was such a tease. Instead I sought out the superstar booths to get some pictures.

Well, at this point I looked all around the convention center for a backpack to purchase to carry all my stuff. I was upset that they didn’t allow outside bags. Seemed like a stupid rule to me. I finally bought a cool bottle opener for $5 just so I could get the canvas bag to carry stuff in. I also found a a place to charge my phone and left it there for almost the whole event. Most of the following pictures are from near the end. I plan on taking more on Saturday.

#KnoxBeer contest, help me name my #homebrew

I’m having another small episode of “writer’s block”. Even putting together a coherent post for this website is difficult. However, an even bigger problem I’m having right now is naming my Cascadian Dark Ale. I had a few ideas, but none of them really sounded right to me. Usually I come up with a name when I formulate the recipe. Sometimes I come up with a better one before I make a label. With this beer, I’m coming up blank. My relative loss of my creative energy could be your gain. I’ve decided to have a contest to name this beer. The rules are simple. Just tell me what you’d would name it if you had brewed it. It also has to be a name that no one has used for a beer before. If it’s on Untappd, it’s automatically disqualified.
Here’s what I’m offering the winner: a mixed six pack of my homebrew, & a small part of the label dedicated to any message you want to put on it. Want to promote your website or twitter handle? Fine. Want to be quoted? Great. Want to write a story or post a joke? Ok by me. Keep in mind though that your label is not going to get seen by a lot of people. I don’t sell my beer, but I do occasionally give some away to friends or family. Also the winner needs to meet me somewhere close by in Knoxville. I live in Vestal, I work near downtown. Sorry, but I’m not traveling all the way to Straw Plains or Farragut to deliver the winning 6 pack. I also will not ship it. Must be 21 or older to win. To enter, just post your proposed name in the comments below.

  More about this style: Cascadian Dark Ale is also referred to by the oxymoronic “Dark IPA”.

On another note, I’ve been putting my new counter pressure filler to good use. Once I figured it out, it works perfectly. I still have a few bottles from each batch that I am naturally conditioning. For quicker drinking, I can bottle  beer only a few days after it’s kegged using this system. It’s much faster then waiting a month for the priming sugar & yeast to carbonate the batch.
